Bad Science Jokes
I am building something different. A way to teach science with humor. Bad Science Jokes started as a high school project my junior year, over 10 years ago. Taking complex topics and making them bite-sized and easy to digest. I found one-liners, and jokes, helped me retain information. Jokes also make people laugh! So, I ran with the idea of Bad Science Jokes. Now, we reach millions of people all around the globe each and every week! People have written to me saying my jokes have helped them with finals, or even school/work related burnout. It makes me happy to make others happy! It's also helping to teach in a new, stress-free, environment.
The STEM field has a male-dominated stereotype around it. When people write to me or see me in person, I regularly get comments saying "you're a girl?!". I don't let it bother me, but do remind them that there are plenty of women in the science field and it shouldn't be surprising. I get the same note from running a comedic profile. I do enjoy being the 'outlier' that helps people change their perception on a topic.
I like to share content from other women in science, engineering, math, and other educational topics. It helps remove the stigma I mentioned earlier. This can also help to bring up other women in the field by getting them more attention online! It's helping to 'normalize' the idea of women in these sectors, and potentially be seen by others in the industry.
I try to take on interns, when possible, to teach them some back-end stuff about running a popular brand social media page. Sometimes I can help young people learn a bit more about social media than what is taught in the average textbook.
