My mom came to the U.S. as a professional registered nurse from Bolivia and worked extra hours at the hospital to help with Spanish speaking patients. Only 2 percent of Latina professionals in the U.S. are in the STEM, Medicine, Finance and Law fields. Latinas in high school do not have role models that look like them. For five consecutive years, I co-created with Michigan Universities the “Latina Empowerment Conference” providing career workshops in STEM, Medicine, Finance and Law. This gave Latina youth the opportunity to hear Latina professionals speak about their careers, in both English and Spanish. About 99% of these Latina students had never stepped on a university campus prior to the event. The experience resulted in their eagerness to pursue these careers in college.
In 2013, I developed a bilingual (Spanish/English) website called Ask The Latina aka Pregunta A Una Latina, providing resources to Latinas about these four fields. In 2021, I decided to develop the first dedicated mentor/mentee application specially designed for Latina high school students. The Ask The Latina app pairs Latina students with Latina professionals in STEM, Medicine, Finance or Law fields. This app helps close the opportunity gap that Latinas in high school face due to the digital divide and systemic barriers. Studies show that a mentor from the same culture or ethnicity are far more valuable than academic advisors. In 2016 my mom passed away in the same hospital she retired from as a Registered Nurse. Not a single Latina doctor or nurse was present. It is my mission to see more Latinas in STEM and these other fields to close Latino patient disparities, increase financial literacy among Hispanics, incorporate Latina perspectives in future innovation and give legal empowerment to Hispanic families. In these fields Latina representation matters. It supports the economic growth of our Hispanic communities and of the United States as a whole.
